Enhancing Education Through Technology /
Title IID Grant
During the 2003-2004 school year, Region 5 (CSD 19, CSD
23, and CSD 27) collaborated with over 70% of its non-public
schools and prepared its Title IID Grantunder the direction
of Jacob Gutnicki. On April 1, 2004, the State Education
Department announced that Region 5 as well as 8 other regions
in NYC would receive Title IID Funding. As a result, we are
able to collaborate with Teaching Matters, CCNY, Brooklyn
College, Plato, ThinkQuest, VLS Content Providers, Apple
Computer, Dell Computer, Avid and Teachers College to assure
that our students meet the NYS Standards through a combination
of project based learning, hands-on activities, Internet
resources, and targeted staff development .
To that end our project, "Achieving
ELA and Math Literacy for the 21st Century" is
a 3-tier program that will expose the K-12 grades to rich
literacy and math activities over a period of 3 1/2 years
that will enable the targeted children to produce a variety
of standards based products including Interactive Stories,
WebQuests, and ThinkQuests.
The purpose of this 3 year project is to help high need
schools in our districts meet the NYS ELA and Math Standards
and become technologically adept through the use of web based
resources (i.e. NYS Virtual Learning Space (VLS)), video
conferencing, and distance learning technology (which enables
authentic learning to take place), the use of video and DVD/CD-ROM
technology, and through the use of local training centers.
Targeted schools will also produce video and web-based resources
which demonstrate exemplary projects, activities aligned
to the NYS Learning Standards, archived Learning Experience
Outlines, Lesson Plans and a video of Best Practices, including
how pedagogues and parents can use the NYS Virtual Learning
Space and other web based resources to improve academic outcomes
for all children.
Documentation of this project will be maintained via digital
videotaping and web blogs (electronic journals). Furthermore,
video technology such as Public Access TV, Video Conferencing,
an Interactive On-Line Community (including bulletin boards,
web blogs, chat lines, and an interactive database), web
based video, and CD/DVD-ROMS will be used to celebrate the
conclusion of this project in a culminating activity. This
activity will involve the local schools with their participating
classes meeting in a celebration of final results and presentation
of Interactive Stories, WebQuests, and ThinkQuests.
