Digital Documentaries

Created by Teaching Matters, Digital Documentaries is a professional development program that helps teachers inspire their students to write and learn about local history and their community.
Students research, direct, and produce their own video examining local issues or historical events while meeting social studies and language arts requirements for grades 5-12.
Digital Documentaries consists of an institute and classroom follow-up visits. During the workshops, teachers will learn the necessary technology skills and classroom management techniques through the hands-on creation of their own documentary. During the classroom visits, a Teaching Matters professional developer will work with the students in the creation of the main documentary project, modeling the classroom implementation of the skills covered in the previous workshop.
The Digital Documentaries program begins with an introductory institute in February. Teaching Matters will then provide participating schools with:
• Ten in-classroom visits that focus on assisting teachers and their students with the development of their documentary.
• Access to the Digital Documentaries website, where participants will be able to find classroom materials, ask questions, and explore topics related to video projects.
• A comprehensive manual that includes a full compliment of teacher and student resources.
• Participation for selected videos in a Bronx Film Festival.
