Now it's time to pick a topic and a subject for your Personal Narrative. Remember, your narrative will be no longer than five to seven minutes in length. You will use both the video camera and supplementary relevant primary source material (photographs, radio broadcasts, personal items like plane tickets, medals, etc.). Everyone will be a member of the film crew and will therefore be assigned a specific job.

Think about the following questions in your groups before you make a decision:

  • What makes a strong topic/story?
  • What do we have access to (images, subject interviews, information)?
  • Who could we invite to our classroom to film?
  • Are we studying something that would make an interesting documentary?
  • What guiding question do we want to answer with our documentary?

When you are ready, work together in groups to create topic proposals and then pitch them to your class. Make sure your pitch has the following elements:

  • A rationale for your choice (your argument for why it would be good)
  • Possible video sources or interviews
  • A description of what the finished product will look like

Vote on each "pitch" to determine the subject.
